Transportation Shiribeshi is located in the southwestern part of the island of Hokkaido. The sea of Japan lies on the northwestern side of the area. Sapporo City and the New Chitose International Airport lie to the east of the district. In the Northwest of the area lies Niseko a popular internationally acclaimed Resort Area which is accessible by car, train and Bus from the New Chitose International Airport.

Area and Population Cape Kamui
The total area of Shiribeshi is 4,307 square kilometres, the area consists of 1 city and 13 towns and 6 villages. In relative terms of size the area accounts for 5.2% of the total area of Hokkaido. The total population of Shiribeshi is 260,000 people (as at Dec. 2006) The population makes up approximately 4.5% of the total population of Hokkaido. Shiribeshi’s main attraction is its amazing natural scenery. The area consists of volcanoes, mountain ranges, valleys, rivers, amazing lakes, ponds and a wealth of natural wildlife. Towering high above the district is Mt.Yotei also known as ‘Ezo Fuji’ The Mt.Fuji of Hokkaido. For residents and visitors to the region, Mt.Yotei is a source of amazement and admiration and is highly respected for its contribution to the landscape.

Climate

Tea Ceremony

From Spring to Summer the region is quite temperate with many fine days. In late Autumn and Winter the winds from the Northwest bring with them colder air currents and very changeable weather with heavy rain which soon changes to heavy snow. The district is blanketed in some of the highest quality snow in the world from late November to mid April.

Shiribeshi - a sightseeing sensation
Shiribeshi is the proud owner of 3 national parks, ‘Shikotsu-Toya National Park’, ‘Niseko-Shakotan-Otaru Kaigan Quasi-National Park,’Kariba-Motta Prefectural Natural Park’ The area hosts in excess of 20 million visitors annually. The attractions for visitor’s coming into the region vary greatly, these range from beautiful Onsen (Hot Springs) through to spectacular seafood and fresh produce. The huge expanse of summer and winter activities are awe inspiring, one visit will not be enough. Try the Rafting, Skiing, Snowboarding and Snow adventures, Jam making, Farm experiences, Glass works. Visit age old Whiskey distilleries, and some of the many boutique Breweries as well. Shiribeshi is growing quickly as one of the gateways to Hokkaido and the rest of Japan. When it comes to handling tourism, Shiribeshi is certainly one of the most advanced areas in Japan. Strong emphasis has been placed on the importance of tourism in the district, language requirements, technical requirements, signage, ease of access and usage of the districts many facilities, have been carefully thought about and are constantly being upgraded. Visit Shiribeshi, it is a pleasant surprise.
