Abundant Water Resources and the Majestic Mountains that Support Them
The Shiribeshi region, which includes Niseko and Otaru, is located in the southwestern part of Hokkaido and is a rich natural area facing the sea, with mountains such as Mt. Yotei. In
winter, snow falls daily around Mt. Yotei. Once the weather warms up and the snow melts,
the melted snow seeps underground and becomes water used to support people’s daily
lives and the production of rich agricultural products. Rivers swollen in early spring have a
stronger current than usual, making rafting and other activities more enjoyable.
JAPOW – Among the Best Powder Snow in the World
There are a host of ski resorts in the Shiribeshi region, including the Niseko area, which has
the most snowfall in Hokkaido. Skiers and snowboarders from all over the world come to the
ski resort for its superb powder snow, also known as JAPOW, which has a moderate moisture
content, makes those on the slopes feel as if they are floating, and has a unique soft texture.
The forests that are lush with grass and trees in summer are covered with snow in winter,
allowing visitors to experience the workings of nature and living creatures only possible at
this time of year, such as walking on soft snow with snowshoes and thinking about what kind
of animals left the footprints they find in the snowfield.
Abundant Hot Springs
In the Shiribeshi region, which is influenced by volcanoes that form diverse natural
landscapes, numerous hot springs gush out from the mountainsides and foothills of volcano
groups, and there are more than 80 hot springs of various qualities said to be effective for
skin care, neuralgia, muscle pain, skin diseases, and relief of fatigue.Many of the hot spring
facilities in the jurisdiction have open-air baths where visitors can enjoy bathing while
taking in the beautiful seasonal scenery, such as sunsets over the Sea of Japan on the
coastline, autumn leaves, and snow-capped Mt. Yotei.
Walking in the Utasai Beech Forest
Kuromatsunai Town is famous as the northern most limit of beech forests in Japan.
The Utasai Beech Forest (Utasaibunarin) was designated a national natural monument
in 1933 for its important academic value. Also, ｔhe Utasai Beech forest has twice
protected from being cutdown. Trekking with the local nature guide, you will learn how
locals conserve the Utasai Beech Forest and how they live in harmony with nature. The
winter season, visitors walk freely around beech forest by wearing snowshoe.
Shiribeshi Wine
The Shiribeshi region is rich in nature as it faces the sea and is lined with mountains such as
Mt. Yotei.There is no shortage of delicious water, fresh seafood, produce from the land, and
other delicacies.In recent years, Hokkaido wineries have been attracting attention from
overseas, and about half of them are located in the Shiribeshi region.
Yoichi and Niki are Hokkaido’s representative wine-grape growing areas.There are an
increasing number of stores that sell locally produced wines that are highly acclaimed both
in Hokkaido and elsewhere, as well as wineries that have their own restaurants and lodging
facilities.
